  • Adelaide Cup Day

    Adelaide Cup Day is South Australia's equivalent of Melbourne Cup Day: a public holiday for a horse race, in this case the Adelaide Cup at Morphettville Racecourse. The race was first run in 1864, and the holiday is observed on the second Monday in March. Unlike the Melbourne Cup, which is a Tuesday in metropolitan Melbourne only, Adelaide Cup Day is a Monday and applies across the whole state. The holiday used to fall in May. It was moved to March in 2006 to give South Australia a long weekend in the autumn, and the race moved with it. That places the holiday in the same week as Labour Day in Victoria and Tasmania and Canberra Day in the ACT.

  • Canberra Day

    Canberra Day commemorates 12 March 1913, when Lady Denman, wife of the Governor-General, stood on Capital Hill and announced the name of the new federal capital. Until that moment the city had been an unnamed plan on paper, chosen in 1908 as a compromise between Sydney and Melbourne. The public holiday is observed on the second Monday in March. Until 2007 it was held on the third Monday, and it was moved a week earlier from 2008 so it sits closer to the actual anniversary. Because it is a Monday the date never needs substitution.

  • Labour Day

    Labour Day commemorates the eight-hour working day, won by Melbourne stonemasons in April 1856 after a march from the University of Melbourne site to Parliament House. Sydney stonemasons had secured similar terms the year before. "Eight hours labour, eight hours recreation, eight hours rest" became the slogan of the trade union movement, and the anniversary was celebrated with processions long before it became a public holiday. Tasmania still calls its holiday Eight Hours Day. Because each colony marked its own anniversary, Labour Day never settled on a single national date, and the differences have only grown as states shuffled holidays to spread them through the year.

March in the public holiday calendar

March is when the state calendars start to diverge. Western Australia takes Labour Day on the first Monday; Victoria and Tasmania take theirs on the second Monday, the same day as Canberra Day in the ACT and Adelaide Cup Day in South Australia. New South Wales, Queensland and the Northern Territory have nothing in March at all. When Easter falls early, Good Friday can land in the last week of the month.
