New Year's Day
New Year's Day is one of the eight public holidays written into the national employment standards, so it applies in every state and territory without any state having to declare it. It is also the only holiday that lands at the same moment for the whole country, which makes it the simplest date on this site: 1 January, every year, no exceptions. What differs is what happens when 1 January falls on a Saturday or Sunday. Every jurisdiction gives workers a weekday off in that case, but the mechanics are not identical, and the difference matters for people who work weekends.
More about New Year's Day
January in the public holiday calendar
January opens with New Year's Day everywhere and closes with Australia Day on the 26th, and in between there is nothing: the only January dates that are public holidays anywhere are the 1st, the 26th, and the Mondays those two move to when they land on a weekend. Tasmania's Devonport Cup, in the first week of the month, is the single regional exception. For most of the country January is the tail of the Christmas break rather than a month of its own holidays, and the Australia Day long weekend is the last one before Easter for NSW, Queensland and the Northern Territory.
